Confirmation is one of the seven sacraments of the Church and an extremely important day in the life of a young person. It is also one of the sacraments of initiation into the Catholic church, the other two being baptism and the Eucharist.

Confirmation takes place every year in both Athenry and Newcastle churches. While Confirmation takes place in the spring, preparation begins a long time before this in the school, the home and the parish.

An important part of the preparation for Confirmation is the Programme, which is run in the parish, beginning with the meeting of the young people preparing for Confirmation, usually a couple of months into the school year, and continues monthly up to Confirmation day itself.

The Confirmation Co-Ordinating Group organise and helps prepare the ceremonies leading up to, and including Confirmation Service.  Parents are very much encouraged to participate in the ceremonies, making it an enjoyable experience for all involved and re-affirming the bond between parents/guardians and young people.

Families are encouraged to avail of the Sacrament of Reconciliation prior to the confirmation ceremony

The various ceremonies include:

  • Gathering Ritual
  • Confirmation Prep classes
  • Confirmation prayer services & pledge ceremony

Everybody involved with the Confirmation Programme is familiar with our Safeguarding Children Policy.

*NOTE: For adults who were not confirmed as children, it means taking part in the Rite of the Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.). For more info on this course, contact one of our parish priests.
